Keep the Heat Out with Solar Control Window Films

Solar rays entering through windows can cause interior spaces to heat up and become uncomfortably warm. Brilliant Window Film and Graphics offers an effective solution to help manage a comfortable interior temperature while maintaining light levels. We install reflective window films, also known as solar control window films, specifically designed to keep heat out while allowing light to pass through. They work as window heat reflectors, stopping heat from penetrating through the window.

Heat Rejection Window Film Types

External Window Films

Window films can also be applied externally for even greater heat rejection gains. This is especially the case with double-glazed windows. External window films are designed for outside installation and feature an additional protective coating to ensure longevity. External window films come with up to a 10 year warranty.

DR (Dual Reflective) Window Films

These solar films contain one side that's reflective, which faces the exterior of the building, and a neutral internal side. This reduces internal reflections in bright rooms and at night, making the tint appear more subtle.

Low-e Window Films

Designed to offer heat rejection along with reducing heat loss in colder months. These films are most effective when used on single glazing.

Neutral or Low Mirror Window Films

Neutral films, often referred to as low-mirror films, give good all-round results. They offer a good balance of heat rejection and aesthetics by providing a pleasing tinted finish to the glass without too much reflection. The window films available are LM20, LM35, and LM50.

Silver Reflective Window Films

Silver reflective window films provide excellent heat rejection through their metallised coating. However, we typically don't recommend darker films (below 50% light transmission) for homes due to internal reflections at night and in rooms with multiple light sources. Silver reflective 20 offers superior heat rejection but isn't ideal for residential use. Silver 50 is better suited for home windows—it's lighter, less visibly reflective, and performs similarly to darker neutral films.

Choosing the Right Window Film for your Windows

Window Films Applied to Single Glazing

Window films applied internally to single glazing offer great performance figures and are easy to apply. Many window film test calculations are performed on single glazing. When comparing window film specifications, ensure the figures given are applicable to your glass type.

Window Films Applied to Double Glazing

Double-glazed windows are the most common type found in homes in the UK. These are two panes of glass separated by an air gap. Window film is easy to apply to double-glazed windows, both internally and externally.

Window Films Applied to Triple Glazing

Solar control window films are typically not suitable for internal installation on triple glazing. However, some films, such as clear UV filtering or certain privacy window films, can be applied internally. Many solar control films can also be applied externally, but it’s always best to get in touch with us so we can perform a glass analysis and compatibility survey on your windows.

Window Films Applied to Secondary Glazing

Window film can be applied to secondary glazing after passing compatibility tests. Secondary glazing will either be glass or clear acrylic, and there are films for both types. It’s important to ensure the correct window film is specified. Our team will guide you to the best choice for your windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Solar window films are designed to block solar rays from entering through the window, which causes internal temperatures to rise. While sunlight entering through a window can help to keep a room at an ambient temperature, in some properties and commercial buildings, solar rays passing through windows can cause interior spaces to become too warm. Reflective heat window films are hugely beneficial for reducing internal temperatures, but also for blocking harmful UV rays from penetrating windows. This, in turn, can help to protect furniture and carpets, reduce glare and boost the aesthetic appeal of a property.

  • While air conditioning and blinds are often the initial go-to choice, heat reflective window films are a highly effective and often preferred alternative. Not only can they provide long-lasting solar protection, but they also look great and are a far cheaper alternative to investing in costly blinds or air conditioning.

  • Tinting your windows with solar control window film significantly reduces heat from entering through glass without blocking all of the natural sunlight.

At Brilliant Window Films & Graphics, we install energy-saving window films that meet the highest standards in heat rejection.

  • Some window films are reflective—which appear like mirrors from the exterior—while others are non-reflective. Mirrored window films are the most effective at reflecting heat, so they can offer the most benefits in terms of solar energy rejection. However, technological advances now mean that clear, non-mirrored window films can also block out the heat without compromising your preferred aesthetics.

  • Not necessarily. We have a wide range of window films offering varying degrees of heat reflection and glare reduction. To prevent the interior from becoming too dark, install a window film with a low amount of visible light reduction.

  • Heat-reflective window films (also known as solar films or UV films) have advanced significantly and are now extremely effective in keeping the heat from entering your commercial building.

Our window films are manufactured to meet the highest grades in heat rejection, achieving a minimum of 99% UV light filtering to protect your furnishings and reduce air conditioning consumption.
